Migrant Case 7/8/06
LAWFUEL – Press Release Service – Early this morning the Coast Guard interdicted a vessel carrying 31 Cuban migrants, one of whom has died. The migrants were discovered after the vessel was stopped following a chase by the Coast Guard. The United States Attorney’s Office is in the process of carefully reviewing the facts and the circumstances of this tragedy.
“During recent months, our community has witnessed several incidents where smugglers have endangered migrants’ lives. Today, yet another life was lost. Smugglers often treat migrants as if they were human cargo, with blatant disregard for individual life and safety. This must stop. The United States Attorneys Office is determined to use all prosecutorial tools at our disposal to investigate and prosecute these smuggling incidents.”
