LawFuel.com – Allen & Overy announced the appointment of partner Aurélien Hamelle to the Paris dispute resolution practice.

Aurélien joins from Metzner Associés, together with associates Léonor Hennerick and Ophélia Claude by the end of May 2014.

He is well known for having acted on some of the most high profile cases in France during recent years, including the representation of various foreign and national firms in French criminal procedures in relation to the UN oil-for-food programme, the EADS insider trading case, and the defence of Dominique de Villepin, the former French Prime Minister, in the Clearstream case. Aurélien has been involved in numerous money laundering, corruption, embargo and international sanction cases for corporate clients in France and the rest of Europe.  He assists clients in extradition cases as well as on European arrest warrants. Aurélien has also represented the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in their breach of privacy case against Closer magazine.

A member of the Paris bar, Aurélien started his career at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Paris and London before joining Metzner Associés in 2005 where he became partner in January 2009.

He is in charge of the criminal litigation teaching programme at the Ecole du Barreau de Paris, and was formerly a lecturer at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris in “transnational criminal law”.

Commenting on Aurélien’s arrival, Denis Chemla, head of Allen & Overy’s Dispute Resolution practice in Paris said: “We are truly delighted to welcome Aurélien Hamelle, with whom I have worked on numerous cases. Aurélien is a well-known and highly respected lawyer in Paris. His arrival will strengthen our position in financial criminal law as well as in regulatory litigation and is a key component of the growth plan of our Litigation practice”.

Aurélien Hamelle added: “The legal market for white collar crime has matured significantly in recent years and its working practices are now similar to those used in commercial dispute law. More resources than ever before are needed to resolve large-scale, multidisciplinary and multi-jurisdictional matters. Allen & Overy’s Dispute Resolution team in Paris was the clear choice for us in order to respond to these changes and we are very happy to be joining the firm.”
