Chadbourne & Parke LLP Sponsors Robert H. Jackson Award for Excellence in Law Student Writing

Award Given by Washington Foreign Law Society to Recognize
Best Article or Note on International or Comparative Law

New York, NY – April 19, 2004 – The international law firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP announced today that it will sponsor the Washington Foreign Law Society’s Justice Robert H. Jackson Award. The $2,500 annual award – newly re-established with Chadbourne’s sponsorship – honors the author of the best student article or note addressing a topic of international or comparative law published during the last year by one of a select group of legal journals. The Society will present the award at its annual Gala Dinner, to be held on April 29th at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

“The ability to write well is essential for attorneys,” said Charles K. O’Neill, the Firm’s Managing Partner. “Chadbourne is pleased to join the Washington Foreign Law Society in encouraging and honoring the very best student writing in the areas of international and comparative law.” According to the Society, Chadbourne’s sponsorship makes the Jackson Award the largest prize available for published student scholarship in the international and comparative law context.

The award is named for Justice Robert H. Jackson (1892-1954), who was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Supreme Court in 1941. Justice Jackson served as Chief American Prosecutor at the Nuremberg War Trials and pioneered much of the current thinking on the use of international law as it applies to war and crimes against humanity.

At the Gala, the Society will also present its Harry Leroy Jones Award, which honors individuals of distinguished merit in the international legal community, to Dr. Peter Eigen, founder and head of Transparency International. A leading international non-governmental organization devoted to combating corruption, Transparency International brings civil society, business, and governments together in a powerful global coalition. Past Jones Award recipients have included Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Deputy Treasury Secretary Stuart E. Eizenstat and Ambassadors Thomas R. Pickering and Jeanne J. Kirkpatrick.
