Chicago—Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that its tsunami relief donation matching program, instituted December 30, has raised nearly $300,000 to help victims in Southeast Asia. The contributions, which include $191,320 in individual contributions and a $100,000 matching donation from the firm, will benefit the American Red Cross and several other relief organizations.
A number of Foley & Lardner attorneys spearheaded their own efforts to raise money for the tsunami victims.
Business law attorney Fred Feldkamp was vacationing in Phuket, Thailand, with his family when the tsunami struck a beach about 100 yards from where they were staying. He and his family, who were safely above the waves, recorded the tsunami as it hit. When Fred and his wife returned to the States, they were invited to participate in an American Red Cross tsunami relief telethon in South Bend, Ind., and share what they learned. The telethon raised $65,000, a 260 percent increase over prior pledges to the local chapter.
Additionally, a half dozen members of the Chicago office worked with the nonprofit music venue HotHouse/Center for International Performance and Exhibition to hold two tsunami benefit relief concerts.
