Clifford Chance hires top equity capital markets partner in Singapore

Raymond Tong to join firm in December 2010

Singapore: Leading international law firm Clifford Chance has hired Raymond Tong, one of Singapore’s most highly regarded equity capital markets (ECM) specialists, as a partner in its global capital markets practice.

“Having worked side-by-side with Raymond on many of Singapore’s most notable IPOs, it is clear that he is one of the leading ECM lawyers in the market, and that his reputation among clients, regulators and professional peers is second to none,” said Crawford Brickley, Clifford Chance’s Head of Capital Markets, Asia.

“This is a coup for our Asia capital markets practice, and especially for our south east Asia team. With Raymond on board, we can now offer top-quality English, US and Singapore law advice for capital markets transactions in Singapore in response to our clients’ requirements.

“We have seen the success of this “one-stop shop” in our Hong Kong capital markets practice for many years and we have no doubt that it will prove to be equally successful in Singapore.”

Raymond has worked on some of the most high-profile ECM deals in Singapore in recent years, including last year’s US$2 billion IPO by CapitaMalls Asia, which was the city’s largest offering for 15 years – a deal on which Clifford Chance also advised.

“The growth of our Asia ECM practice over the last five years has been phenomenal, and with Raymond, our Singapore law practice will match the established quality of our international law practice in that area,” said Peter Charlton, Clifford Chance’s Head of Asia Region.

“We welcome him to the team also as part of our continued investment in Singapore, where we have now hired, relocated or promoted eight market-leading partners in just over two years. Coupled with our Qualified Foreign Law Practice licence and steep business growth, it has been a very successful few years for our Singapore office.”

Raymond will join the firm in December 2010. “I’m strongly committed to the growth of Singapore as one of Asia’s leading capital markets, and want to see it attract the biggest and best deals,” said Raymond.

“By joining a firm with an outstanding international network, I will have greater opportunities to broaden the spread of issuers attracted to our practice and, in turn, to the Singapore market.”
