LawFuel – International law firm Eversheds has today announced the high profile appointment of Anselm Eldergill, as a consultant, to its leading healthcare team. Anselm is a health law expert with 25 years of national and international experience in the mental health services field.
Regarded a leading figure in his field, Anselm has extensive experience in conducting Mental Health Review Tribunals, judicial review applications and cases involving the European Convention on Human Rights. Throughout his career, Anselm has provided legal advice to and on behalf of the Mental Health Act Commission, as well as to various bodies, counsel, solicitors, health authorities and local authorities. Earlier this year, he was commissioned by the Department of Health to draft the new ‘sectioning’ forms and guidelines on the Mental Capacity Act deprivation of liberty procedures for PCTs, local authorities, hospitals and care homes.

Anselm is an Alexander Maxwell Law Scholar and has held many high-profile professional appointments. He is the elected President of both the leading mental health law associations: the Mental Health Lawyers Association and the Institute of Mental Health Act Practitioners. He has chaired nine NHS inquiries following the commission of homicides by patients, and numerous untoward incident inquiries. He has also served as an Assistant Coroner. Previously, he was the Chairman of the Mental Health Act Commission’s Law & Ethics Committee and legal adviser to the Mental Health Commission for Northern Ireland.
Anselm has written a 1400-page textbook on mental health law, and written articles for publications such as The Princeton University Law Journal, The Journal of Forensic Psychiatry and The Guardian. His work in the healthcare law field has led to entries in Who’s Who in America and the Dictionary of International Biography. Chambers’ & Partners’ A Guide to the Legal Profession describes him as:
‘Widely regarded as a ‘terrific authority’ on mental health matters.’
