Holland & Knight Merger The First For 2023 Boosts Healthcare Practice

Holland & Knight, one of the largest of the Big Law firms, has announced a merger with Nashville-based Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis in a move that will boost Holland & Knight’s healthcare law practice.

Waller Lansden have 280 lawyers, which lifts the lawyer headcount at Holland & Knight to over 2000. The firm merged with Thompson & Knight in 2001 and continues to expand its global footprint.

The deal is the first legal merger for 2023 and follows the 2022 post-pandemic mergers which has lead many to predict an uptick in such combinations this year, particularly as the legal market slows with recessionary headwinds and other factors affecting firms’ growth.

Healthcare law is one of the growth areas in legal practice and has been a strong part of Holland & Knight’s growth. The firm is one of the largest in the US and one of the largest law firms in Florida.

Apart from healthcare work, Waller also have financial services, private equity, real estate and other practice areas that they focus on. The merger also gives Holland & Knight a presence in the growing Nashville market, as well as providing a total of 35 offices globally.

“We look forward to joining forces with one of the most established and well-respected brands in healthcare law, along with remarkable capabilities in many other key industries and practices that are well aligned with our strategic initiatives,” Steven Sonberg, managing partner of Holland & Knight, said in a statement.

Nashville is “home to many of the country’s most significant healthcare companies and a destination of choice for corporate relocations,” the firms said in the statement.
