UK Law Firm ‘Trust Baby’ Specialist Gets Millions

A specialized wills and trusts dispute law firm in the UK have obtained private equity backing of £3.25m from an equity firm that focuses on investments in the legal sector.

The investment is from BGF is a well known equity firm and is invested in IDR for the firm to hire new staff, invest in technology, and expand its office network to the Midlands, North East, and London.

IDR Law distinguishes itself as the sole UK firm focusing exclusively on resolving wills, probate, and trust disputes.

Most of their work is generated through referrals, supported by an online network launched last year that enables other firms to refer clients facing disputes.

Founder and CEO of IDR Law, Martin Holdsworth, expressed that they have identified significant growth opportunities but are committed to taking on cases where they genuinely believe they can assist individuals in achieving their goals.

Charles Layfield, a former legal director at Minster Law, will join IDR’s board as the non-executive chairman.

BGF has made numerous investments in the legal sector, including Thomas Legal, a conveyancing specialist in the South East, Equilaw, a Gloucester-based practice, and Setfords Solicitors, a nationwide consultancy firm. In 2015, BGF acquired a 26% stake in McMillan Williams, a South East firm, for £5m. However, the business was later sold after entering administration in 2020.

As a minority, non-controlling partner, BGF emphasizes a patient outlook on investments, aligning its long-term goals with the management teams it supports.

Chris Boyes, an investor at BGF, reflected on their entry into the legal market and praised Martin Holdsworth for his entrepreneurial and innovative approach to a traditional industry, resulting in remarkable growth and a positive work environment.
