About the Role

Avid Law

Work alongside or supporting Aotearoa’s leading technology companies and their founders who think differently, tackle global problems and take Kiwi tech to the world.

At Avid.legal, you’ll work closely with those businesses and the investors backing them, helping turn ambitious ideas into deals that move them forward.

While we may wear tees, jeans and sneakers, our work is anything but casual. We’re a highly regarded corporate practice delivering a top-tier standard of legal service: rigorous thinking and clear advice with a sharp commercial focus.

Get close to the deals

A steady flow of venture capital raises and M&A transactions is at the heart of our corporate work. You’ll work on raises from both the company side and the VC investor side, including for many of NZ’s top VC firms. Those deals are supplemented by general corporate work: share schemes, shareholder arrangements, governance and restructures.

It’s an opportunity to understand how ambitious businesses are funded, built and bought.

You’ll get close to the final work product, contributing from the early conversations through to signing and completion with meaningful drafting, due diligence and transaction coordination. As your confidence grows, so will your ownership of smaller matters and defined workstreams.

You’ll work directly with the directors, sharpening your drafting and learning how to run a transaction well. Along the way, you’ll get to know the clients and build your understanding of the key commercial drivers that shape a deal.

What we are looking for

You’ve started building your legal skills. Now you want interesting work, closer involvement in deals and room to grow. We’re looking for strong foundations, curiosity and a willingness to get stuck in.

Ideally, you’ll have 1–2 years’ PQE. Corporate or commercial private practice experience is useful, but we welcome transferable experience from in-house roles.

Here’s what matters to us:

  • You have been admitted in New Zealand and you have some genuine legal workplace experience.
  • You write clearly, have ruthless attention to detail and take pride in getting the basics right.
  • You are proactive. You can organise competing tasks, follow work through and speak up early if you foresee problems with suggestions for how to resolve them.
  • You think before you ask, but you do ask. You are comfortable receiving direct feedback and can show that you apply it.
  • You are curious about clients and the commercial reason behind the document, not only the wording on the page.
  • You are good to work with: straightforward, reliable, collaborative, and willing to help with all aspects of any given job.
  • You are open to always improving how you work, whether that be using AI or working out hacks to reduce the amount of email dross lawyers can be famous for.

Interested?

Send us your CV, academic transcript, and a brief cover note telling us what you have learned from your legal experience so far, what kind of work you would like more of, and how you think you can help Avid.legal continue to move the dial.

Applications close on 30 October. We’ll review applications and hold interviews before the closing date, so we encourage you to apply early.

Employer questions

Your application will include the following questions:

  • Which of the following statements best describes your right to work in New Zealand?

  • How much notice are you required to give your current employer?
  • How many years of experience do you have in the Legal Industry?
