KDV Law: Corporate-IP Law

Perry Sofferman and Maritza Gomez Join Kaufman Dolowich & Voluck As Partners in Ft. Lauderdale Office;

(July 16, 2019, Ft. Lauderdale, FL) — Kaufman Dolowich & Voluck LLP (KDV), a leading national law firm, today announced that Perry F. Sofferman is joining the firm as a partner and chair of the firm’s new Corporate and Intellectual Property Practice. In addition, Maritza I. Gomez, a former Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) trial attorney, is joining KDV as a labor and employment partner. Both will be located in KDV’s Ft. Lauderdale office.

Sofferman is the second partner to join KDV this year in Florida to launch a new practice group. Thomas Morante joined in January to start KDV’s Insurance Regulatory and Transactional Practice.

Prior to joining KDV, Sofferman was a shareholder in the Ft. Lauderdale office of Fowler White Burnett, where he was colleagues with Bruce Liebman, KDV co-managing partner of the Florida office, and Avery Dial, KDV professional liability partner.  Gomez joins KDV from the Ft. Lauderdale office of Kelley Kronenberg where she was a partner.

“KDV has taken critical and exciting steps in Florida this year to both broaden the range of practices the firm offers while also reinforcing KDV’s hallmark practices in insurance defense,” said Liebman.  “Perry’s 20 years of experience handling corporate transactions and intellectual property issues will enhance the services we are able to provide to our clients. His practice complements Tom Morante’s regulatory and transactional practice and they will often be working together. Maritza’s work with EEOC adds a great component to our labor and employment practice which has grown tremendously in South Florida over the past couple of years.”

Sofferman represents clients in business transactions including corporate structuring and acquisitions, trademark, copyright, licensing, publishing, privacy, HIPAA and export compliance. He also has extensive in-house experience, including Counsel for Scholastic Inc. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from New York University, his J.D. from New York Law School, his MBA from Baruch College and his LL.M from the University of Alabama.

“I’m pleased to be rejoining former colleagues at KDV and to be a part of this growing office,” said Sofferman. “My in-house perspective will be a value-add to clients and I am naturally focused on practical solutions as well as strategic planning.”

Gomez handles a wide range of employment and labor matters including discrimination and harassment, non-compete agreements, employment contract disputes, retaliation claims, disciplinary actions, wage and hour violations and class actions, whistleblower claims and matters dealing with the Family and Medical Leave Act, Title VII, Americans with Disabilities Act and Fair Labor Standards Act.  She provides employment related training and has prepared, negotiated, and interpreted policies, including drafting of employment handbooks in both English and Spanish. Maritza earned her B.S. from Oral Roberts University, her J.D. (magna cum laude) from Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico Law School and her LL.M. from Tulane University School of Law. She is Latina Commissioner for the Hispanic National Bar Association.

“KDV’s national platform will allow me to offer additional services and support from coast to coast to my clients,” said Gomez. “My experience working in the Miami district office of the EEOC gave me a perspective I can share with clients and colleagues.”
