Law Firm Announcements – Alcoa Inc Appoints Greenberg Traurig Principal Provider of IP Law Services

New York, November 11, 2008 – LawFuel – Legal Announcements – Greenberg Traurig, LLP announced that the firm will serve as the primary provider of intellectual property law services for Alcoa Inc. pursuant to an agreement signed last week. According to the terms of the agreement, Greenberg Traurig will perform the majority of Alcoa’s non-adversarial intellectual property work on a fixed fee basis. This marks the continuation of the relationship between Alcoa and Greenberg Traurig relating to intellectual property matters and the legal services model established between Greenberg Traurig and Alcoa in January 2006.

Specifically, Greenberg Traurig works in cooperation with Alcoa’s in-house intellectual property counsel to provide Alcoa with a wide range of general IP legal services including patent, trademark and copyright prosecution, IP licensing, opinions, due diligence and domain name management. In addition, Greenberg Traurig has been designated as a preferred provider for non-retainer matters such as IP litigation and other inter parties proceedings including reexaminations oppositions, and interferences. The agreement is an example of how Greenberg Traurig partners with clients to develop creative fee arrangements to satisfy their business and legal objectives.

The project is led by Scott Bornstein, Co-Chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Patent Litigation Group and a shareholder in the New York office, with significant contributions from Barry Schindler and James Donoian. They will continue to oversee an Alcoa-focused team of more than 40 IP lawyers across 13 Greenberg Traurig offices supporting Alcoa’s intellectual property needs under the direction of Alcoa’s in-house counsel. As part of the collaboration, Greenberg Traurig will continue to have attorneys and support staff working full-time from Alcoa’s research and development facility in Alcoa Center, Pennsylvania.

“The strategic relationship works because Alcoa is able to leverage Greenberg Traurig’s vast intellectual property resources to obtain high quality IP services in a cost-effective manner,” said Tom Trempus, Alcoa Senior Counsel and Intellectual Property Law Practice Leader. “We look forward to continuing to work closely with Greenberg Traurig for many years to come.”

Bornstein adds: “In this challenging economic environment, it is more important than ever for outside counsel to be creative in structuring fee arrangements that ensure the delivery of high quality legal services in a predictable, cost effective manner. The Alcoa-Greenberg Traurig relationship does exactly that.”
