LAWFUEL – Law News Network – Debevoise & Plimpton LLP marked its 75th anniversary on October 1, 2006. Founded by Eli Whitney Debevoise and William Stevenson in 1931, the firm now has more than 630 lawyers in eight cities throughout the world.

“Our 75th anniversary gives us a special opportunity to reflect upon the growth of our firm and the standards set for us by our founding partners. We are grateful for the challenging, fulfilling work our clients provide us and for the collegiality we share as a firm,” said Debevoise presiding partner Martin Frederic Evans. “In the challenging landscape of 1931, Whitney Debevoise saw that the world was changing and had the courage and confidence to build a firm that embraced change. We look forward to continuing to meet the changing needs of our clients and to embrace the challenge of new opportunities.”

To mark the firm’s 75th anniversary, Debevoise is proud to support a New York institution that also opened its doors in 1931, the Whitney Museum of American Art. Debevoise is the 75th Anniversary Sponsor of the exhibit “Picasso and American Art,” which opens at the Whitney on September 28, 2006. The landmark exhibition, more than ten years in the planning, celebrates the dramatic impact of Picasso on the course of 20th-century American art. It places Picasso masterworks alongside pieces by Max Weber, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, and others.

“We are honored to support the Whitney Museum, an institution with which we not only share an anniversary but also the view that change presents opportunity,” observed Paul H. Wilson, Jr., a senior partner and head of the firm’s anniversary committee. “Debevoise has long supported the arts through organizations such as Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, which delivers pro bono legal services and information to more than 10,000 members of the arts community each year. We are very pleased to help bring this wonderful exhibition to the public.”

Since its founding, Debevoise has been committed to participation in a wide range of community, civic and pro bono activities. The firm consistently ranks among the top firms in its commitment to pro bono work and this year was named a recipient of the American Bar Association’s Pro Bono Publico Award. 2006 also marked the third consecutive year in which the firm ranked 1st in The American Lawyer’s “A-List,” a nationwide ranking of law firms based upon pro bono performance, associate satisfaction, revenue per lawyer and diversity.
