Lawyer Cahills no present threat to fellow countryman Michael Campbell

Wellington, New Zealand 7 November LAWFUEL The Law News Network Wellington lawyer John Cahill scooped Wellington golfs prestigious Baffy Cup in Wellington last weekend at the Royal Heretaunga Golf Clubs annual event.

John, a long-time sole practitioner and son of legal legend Bart Cahill, played his best ever round to storm home with a 92 round. His score only three years’ earlier was 130 when John made the bold promise that he would win the Baffy one day. That day came on Sunday.

Wellington’s renowned winds had created mild havoc on the meticulous course the day before, with balls blown from the greens and golfers fighting the elements as well as their handicaps. However, Sunday’s weather proved considerably more benign and suited John Cahill’s game plan, which was simply “to play the best golf I could.”

“I wasn’t even aware I was leading,” John said. His handicap at 26 saw him play a near faultless game that soon had him take the game with a seven shot advantage.

Forever humble, he nevertheless takes pride in the achievement, which he dedicated to his late mother Nan, who introduced him to the game and died earlier this year.

Next year?

“Who knows? I’ve thought about turning professional,” he said tongue-in-cheek, “but I don’t think I’ll give up my day job yet.”
