The IP Hall of Fame was created to recognize those individuals who have played a major role in the creation of today’s intellectual property system. Inductees into the IP Hall of Fame are selected for their outstanding contributions to the development of intellectual property law and practice and for helping to establish intellectual property as one of the key business assets of the 21st century. The first inductees were announced in 2006 and included former U.S. presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, French author Victor Hugo and inventor Thomas Edison, as well as living individuals such as Marshall Phelps of Microsoft, former U.S. Senator Birch Bayh and Sir Robin Jacob.
Mr. Gilson has practiced trademark and unfair competition law in the U.S. for more than 40 years. He has handled numerous trials and appeals before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and the federal courts and has written and spoken widely on the subject of trademark law. He has received numerous awards and other professional recognitions, including the Burton Award for Excellence in Legal Achievement for legal writing for three years and the International Trademark Association’s President’s Award for Dedicated and Distinguished Service.
Mr. Gilson is the original author of a standard legal treatise in the field, first published in 1974 as Trademark Protection and Practice. This year the publisher, LexisNexis, renamed it Gilson on Trademarks. Last year Mr. Gilson’s daughter Anne Gilson LaLonde, after a decade of work on the treatise, was named Author, with Mr. Gilson playing an integral role as collaborator. The multi-volume work comprehensively covers the law of trademarks in the United States.
Mr. Gilson joins eight other prominent members of the global intellectual property community selected for this year. He now becomes a voting member of the IP Hall of Fame Academy joining Brinks partner James R. Sobieraj, one of the founding members of the Academy. The inductees were honored at ceremonies hosted by Ocean Tomo Auctions and Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) magazine which were held on October 24, 2007 at the Field Museum, Chicago.
