Legendary Baltimore Lawyer Shale Stiller Returns to DLA Piper as Partner
A Homecoming for Influential President of the Weinberg Foundation
(Baltimore) February 25, 2010 – One of Baltimore’s best known and well respected lawyers, Shale Stiller, is returning to DLA Piper as a partner. Stiller rejoins DLA Piper after serving for five years as the President, CEO and Chairman of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the world with over $2 billion in assets.
Stiller has been a fixture in Baltimore’s legal and civic circles for decades. He was recently named a co-chair of the transition team for incoming mayor Stephanie C. Rawlings-Blake. He returns to DLA Piper as a partner in the firm’s Mount Washington office, where he will focus on estate planning, taxation, corporations, complex litigation and representing nonprofit entities.

Stiller has practiced in many areas of law, and is equally accomplished in and outside the courtroom. Known as a top trial lawyer, Stiller recently won a $600 million verdict against the government of Iran for its involvement in the terrorist bombing of the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia. Stiller was also named Best Lawyers’ 2010 Baltimore Corporate Lawyer of the Year. He has been named in every edition of The Best Lawyers in America since it was first published in 1987.

About Shale Stiller
Stiller has been an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law for a record 47 consecutive years (and counting), where he has taught federal estate and gift taxation, constitutional law, federal jurisdiction, and the law of nonprofit organizations. He is an active member of the Boards of Trustees of Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine for over 25 years, and is the current Chairman of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Compensation Committee for the 8th consecutive year. Stiller is also a board member of the East Baltimore Development Inc., a nonprofit partnership of private and public entities that is undertaking the single largest redevelopment project in Baltimore, transforming 88 acres with $1.8 billion in new investments. He serves as a board member of six private foundations in addition to the Weinberg Foundation. Stiller has also served as National Vice President of the American Jewish Committee for many years.
Stiller has a long track record of prominent legal work and advocacy in Maryland. Together with the late Roger D. Redden, a prominent Maryland lawyer, he co-authored a seminal article leading to the complete revision of the entire statutory law of Maryland and was the principal draftsman of the statutory laws on estates and trusts. He was also appointed lead lawyer by Governor Hughes in pursuing the individuals involved in the Old Court Savings and Loan scandal in the 1980s. Stiller is the only Maryland lawyer ever elected as a fellow in both the American College of Tax Counsel and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
Stiller received an LL.B. from Yale University and an M.L.A. from Johns Hopkins University.
