SAN DIEGO (March 5, 2018) – Morrison & Foerster partner Eric M. Acker has been named a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal associations in North America. Mr. Acker was inducted into the college during the annual spring meeting that took place this past weekend in Phoenix, Arizona.

Mr. Acker specializes in intellectual property and patent litigation and has participated in more than 50 trials in courtrooms across the country involving a variety of technologies and significant legal issues. Mr. Acker joined Morrison & Foerster in 1999 after spending ten years as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the District of Columbia and the Southern District of California. Since joining the firm, Mr. Acker has tried patent and other intellectual property cases in California, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Utah, Texas, and Nevada. One of Mr. Acker’s most significant wins came when he helped a Morrison & Foerster team successfully defend Novell’s copyright ownership of the UNIX software code, rejecting a plaintiff’s damages claims of up to $200 million. For that win, Mr. Acker received the 2012 California Lawyer Attorney of the Year (CLAY) award.

“It is a real honor to be inducted as a Fellow in the American College and to follow in the footsteps of the exceptional trial lawyers at Morrison & Foerster, and elsewhere, who are Fellows,” said Mr. Acker. “I look forward to upholding the high standards of the American College as I continue to work to win cases for Morrison & Foerster clients in significant IP matters.”

Founded in 1950, the American College of Trial Lawyers is comprised of the top trial lawyers in the United States and Canada. Membership is limited to no more than one percent of the total lawyer population in the two countries, and nominees must go through a comprehensive vetting process that includes confidential evaluations by judges they have appeared before and opposing counsel they have gone against, a poll of every Fellow in the jurisdiction, and a two-thirds majority vote by members. Invitation is only extended to those who have a minimum of 15 years’ trial experience and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility, and collegiality. Membership currently includes more than 5,700 Fellows.

Mr. Acker is the 14th Morrison & Foerster lawyer to be named a Fellow of the college, joining previous honorees such as Hon. William Alsup, James Bennett, James Brosnahan, Melvin Goldman, Arturo González, Seth Hufstedler, Harold McElhinny, Charles Patterson, Robert Raven, Don Rushing, Linda Shostak, and Howard Soloway.
