When sports law professor Marc Edelman first began to receive requests to adjudicate fantasy sports disputes, Edelman thought these requests were unusual. However, as Edelman continued to offer his assistance to the growing number of doctors, bankers and businesspeople that sought his guidance, the professor decided it was time to launch SportsJudge.com — a website devoted entirely to resolving fantasy sports disputes by using legal reasoning.
Since its launch in January 2007, SportsJudge.com has become something of a phenomenon for fantasy enthusiasts. SportsJudge.com has resolved disputes for fantasy leagues throughout the United States, including disputes for high-stakes leagues in New York, NY, Atlanta, GA, and San Francisco, CA. With the fantasy football season ready to kickoff at the end of August, SportsJudge.com looks forward to sustained growth.
“The opportunity to build relationships with high-end fantasy sports owners adds another exciting element to my career,” said Edelman, who teaches sports law at Seton Hall University and Manhattanville College. “Having done a small amount of fantasy-sports dispute resolution even before the launch of SportsJudge.com, I have seen first hand how unresolved fantasy disputes can tear friendships apart. Like any arbitrator, my goal is to resolve disagreements fairly, and to keep relationships together.”
Since the start of the 2007 baseball season, SportsJudge.com has adjudicated a wide range of fantasy disputes, many of which involve trades. A sample of Edelman’s five favorite opinions — some of which date back to his earlier forays into fantasy-sports dispute resolution — appear for viewing on his website. According to Edelman, “it is important to make at least some prior decisions available, because past decisions serve as the precedent for resolving later disputes. This principle in the legal world is known as stare decisis.”
Edelman’s credentials as SportsJudge.com’s Chief Justice of Fantasy Sports are damn near perfect. In addition to holding degrees from both the Wharton School and Michigan Law School, and having worked for two of America’s most prestigious law firms, Edelman also has competed in some of the nation’s most competitive fantasy sports leagues, including the world-famous League of Alternative Baseball Reality (“LABR”). While attending law school, Edelman was a fantasy sports reporter for Rotowire.com, and earlier wrote sports for The Daily Pennsylvanian.
Based on Edelman’s strong following both as a lawyer and academic, SportsJudge.com has received interest from both sports fans and the broader legal community.
