New York, NY – Nov. 10, 2004 – LAWFUEL – Law firm, legal, attorney news – The international law firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP announced today that it has agreed to provide a gift of $100,000 to the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service, located at the University of Southern Maine. Chadbourne wanted to honor its former partner for his many contributions to public service.

The pledge will support the building of a new facility for the Muskie School of Public Service. The school plans to dedicate a conference room in Chadbourne’s honor.

Elected governor of Maine in 1954, Mr. Muskie served two terms before being elected to the United States Senate in 1958. Ten years later, he was the Democratic nominee for U.S. Vice President, and made a strong bid for the 1972 Democratic nomination for the presidency. Mr. Muskie was sworn in as the 58th U.S. Secretary of State on May 8, 1980, a position he held until January 1981. He then joined Chadbourne as a partner in its Washington, D.C. office, where he was active in a number of organizations that dealt with foreign policy and the environment, until his death in 1996.

During his 22 years in the U.S. Senate, Mr. Muskie was responsible for legislation that even today stands at the heart of the nation’s environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, as well as a wide range of other important legislation, such as the Budget Reform Act.

“Over the years, the Firm’s clients and its lawyers benefited greatly from Senator Muskie’s wealth of experience and wisdom,” said Charles K. O’Neill, the Firm’s managing partner. “This pledge serves not only as a tribute to Edmund Muskie the Governor, the Senator, the Secretary of State and Chadbourne partner, but to the person of Edmund Muskie — a man of great intellect, unwavering principle and utmost integrity. We were most fortunate and proud to have him as a partner in the Firm. In fact, our conference center in our Washington, D.C. office is named after Senator Muskie.”

The Muskie School has been increasingly recognized in Maine and nationally for applying the university’s analytic and research resources to critical issues in the fields of health policy, public policy and management, community planning and economic development.

“The school has played an integral role in educating future leaders, convening current public leaders, and in studying solutions to real-life issues throughout the nation,” said William D’Amico, a partner in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office. “With this endowment, we wanted to help the school to continue its pursuit of excellence and to honor Senator Muskie as an exemplar of public service.”
