The Cleary Memorial Prize

One of the country’s most prestigious legal scholarships, the Cleary Memorial Prize is named after former Court of Appeal Judge Sir Timothy Cleary.  Administered by the Law Foundation, the Cleary Prize is worth $5000 annually and is open to any barrister and/or solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.  Applicants are eligible for consideration for the prize if they apply within a three year period from the date of their admission to the bar.

Ethel Benjamin Scholarship – 

This is one of the most highly prized scholarships in New Zealand, valued at up to $50,000 and administered also by the Law Foundation.  It is provided to outstanding women law graduates for post-graduate study at some of the world’s top universities in the UK and the US.

Applications close on 1 March each year.

Otago Law Alumni Scholarship

We welcome your application for the Otago Law Alumni Scholarship for the Faculty of Law at the University of Otago.

This scholarship is to provide support to high achieving, deserving year 13 students who aspire to study Law at Otago.

For many students the practical aspect of attending our fine University is merely a dream and one that appears to be out of their reach. This scholarship will give support to deserving students that may otherwise not have this opportunity.

This will provide financial support for tuition fees or accommodation fees in their 1st year of studying Law.

Alumni and friends of the Faculty of Law have gifted funds to provide scholarships for students who have demonstrated academic ability and who can show significant financial need.

Value: $5000 in the form of reduced Residential College fees and/or tuition fees for the first year of study

Cheryl Waldrum Scholarship in Law

The Cheryl Waldrum Scholarship in Law was established in 2001 in memory of Cheryl Waldrum, who died in January 2001, just short of her 44th birthday. Cheryl was a law graduate of the Universities of Western Ontario and Otago and a member of the academic staff at both institutions.

This scholarship is intended to assist undergraduate law students from the University of Otago taking papers at the Law Faculty of the University of Western Ontario, as part of the Student Exchange Agreement between the two law faculties.

Value: Maximum of $2,000 per year. May be awarded annually to one applicant or shared between 2 applicants.
How to apply: Submit application form to the Administrator of the Faculty of Law.

Clarrie Stevens Memorial Scholarship

The Clarrie Stevens Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 by the Trustees of the Rua and Clarrie Stevens Charitable Trust, in memory of prominent Dunedin lawyer, the late Clarrie Stevens. The Scholarship is awarded annually to students in the final year of study for the degree of Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Laws with Honours. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated special ability in the areas of wills and trusts or commercial law. Financial need, as well as academic ability, will be taken into account in awarding the Scholarship.

Value: $3,000. If several deserving candidates, the scholarship may be shared.
How to apply: Please submit your completed application form to the Faculty of Law reception. Application forms are also available here, or can be collected from the Faculty of Law reception.
Applications close: 31 March each year.

Sir Harold Barrowclough Scholarship

The Sir Harold Barrowclough Scholarship was established in 1972. Sir Harold Barrowclough bequeathed the sum of $2,000 to the University of Otago to establish scholarships for students of the Faculty of Law.
Scholarship guidelines:
1. The scholarship may be awarded only to students who are or have been students of the Faculty of Law of the University of Otago and who, having completed their LLB degrees, are proceeding to a higher degree in New Zealand or overseas.
2. The scholarship shall be awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of a selection committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of the Faculty of Law or their nominees. If they are unable to agree on any matter, it shall be referred to an enlarged Committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Law and the President of the Otago District Law Society or their nominees.
3. The University Council may fix or vary the amount to be paid annually to the scholar.
4. Unless otherwise decided by the University, the scholarship shall be tenable for one year, but, on the recommendation of the Selection Committee, it may be extended to two or three years.
5. The scholarship shall be tenable with any other scholarship.

Value: The amount of the prize may vary from year to year, but is usually in the range $1,000–$1,200.
How to apply: Application is by letter to the Dean of the Faculty of Law.
Applications close: 15 November each year.

The Kirsty Watterson Memorial Scholarship in Law

Established through the generosity of the Watterson family in 2013 in remembrance of Kirsty Watterson, a University of Otago Faculty of Law graduate who passed away in 2007.

After graduating with an LLB(Hons)/BA in 1995 Kirsty joined Bell Gully in Auckland and later lived in Oman, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, with her husband Roger Clarke, a partner in Trowers and Hamlins. In 2004 Kirsty joined Shoosmiths, a national firm in the United Kingdom, and in 2006 she was invited to join the partnership, specialising in Banking and Finance in the Thames Valley office. Kirsty passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on 5th December 2007, whilst returning to Hampshire, following a holiday with her mother Margaret Watterson and two sisters, Zara and Amy, both of whom studied at Otago University. Kirsty is survived by her husband Roger and their two children Amy and Hugo.

Applicants must be:

  • undertaking the LLB degree at 200-level or higher and have at least one full year of study to complete their law degree
  • in financial need and who otherwise might not be able to continue to study in the Faculty of Law

Value: $6000 tuition fee waiver in the first instance
