Orrick Continues Global IP Expansion with Los Angeles Partner

LOS ANGELES – LawFuel – Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP announced today that Robert W. Dickerson has joined the firm as a partner in its Intellectual Property Group in Los Angeles. Formerly the head of Jones Day’s Los Angeles intellectual property group and Managing Partner of Lyon & Lyon, Dickerson has more than 25 years of IP experience, with an emphasis on patent trial work.

Dickerson’s move to Orrick follows the expansion of Orrick’s IP practice with the recent additions of Joseph Calvaruso, former head of Chadbourne & Parke’s intellectual property group and Mark Wine, former co-chair of McDermott, Will & Emery’s Los Angeles intellectual property, media & technology department.

Orrick’s IP practice in Southern California has grown significantly in 2008. In the past five months, eight IP lawyers have joined the firm’s Los Angeles and Orange County offices, and the firm expects continued growth there in the coming months.

“Orrick’s global intellectual property practice has become a destination for the best and brightest lawyers and the world’s leading technology businesses,” said Gary Weiss, Managing Partner for North America and Chair of the Intellectual Property Group. “We continue to focus on adding leading, first-chair litigators who have a track record of success in the courtroom and with clients. Rob is just that kind of lawyer. Rob adds even greater capability to our U.S. West Coast patent litigation capabilities, and we look forward to further growth there as well as on the U.S. East Coast and in Europe and Asia.”

Dickerson’s experience includes serving as first-chair in many trials and evidentiary hearings involving patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and franchise issues. He has litigated in state and district courts throughout the United States, and has extensive trial experience in the International Trade Commission. He has also argued numerous appeals to state and federal appellate courts and state supreme courts.

In addition, Dickerson’s patent litigation experience has involved a wide range of technologies, including laser sintering, stereolithography, flashlights, biotechnology, integrated chips, medical devices, veterinarian products, commercial garment finishing, laminated floor panels, computer switches, flash memory and various mechanical devices. He also oversees patent and trademark prosecution matters and advises clients on their overall IP portfolios, including national and global IP strategies, and licensing programs for patents and trademarks.

“Orrick’s commitment to intellectual property, to the continuing expansion of the depth and strength of its IP capabilities worldwide, and its proven track record of remarkable success, are what most attracted me to the firm,” said Dickerson. “I’ve litigated cases with Orrick lawyers in the past, and already know the firm and many of its lawyers well. This is an extremely good fit for me. I look forward to being part of the Orrick team and contributing to its continued success as one of the premier IP firms not only in the United States, but around the world.”

Dickerson received his J.D. from Southwestern University in 1979 and his B.S. in industrial engineering and operations research from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973.
