Philip J. Bagley III, a Richmond-based partner at Troutman Sanders LLP, has been elected chair of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Section of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law (RPPT). He was selected at the ABA’s annual meeting in San Francisco.

Mr. Bagley’s election to chair the RPPT section is the culmination of a three-year progression through RPPT leadership positions, including two years as vice chair in charge of the Real Property division and one year as chair-elect. Mr. Bagley has been active in national real estate organizations for more than 25 years, including service as president of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers just prior to moving on to the leadership track for RPPT.

As chair of RPPT for the next 12 months, Mr. Bagley will oversee the work of a 24-person governing council, two divisions (Real Property and Probate/Trust), and more than 50 substantive committees. With more than 30,000 active members, RPPT is the third largest section of the ABA. It provides a wide variety of services to its members and the Bar, including extensive continuing legal education, numerous publications, a Òdirt lawÓ online discussion group, and special programs including mentoring for minority lawyers conducted in conjunction with the National Bar Association.

In addition to his ABA responsibilities, Mr. Bagley will continue to maintain an active practice in the Troutman Sanders Real Estate section, where he is chair of the Commercial Development and Real Estate Investments Practice Group.
