Reed Smith LLP an international top 25 law firm, has announced the addition of Bruce Markowitz as a partner in its Business & Finance Department, effective immediately. He will work from the firm’s expanding Falls Church office in Northern Virginia.

A corporate, restructuring and real estate transaction lawyer, Mr.Markowitz was formerly a partner in the Business Transactions group at Morgan Lewis & Bockius in McLean, Virginia, where his practice was focused on telecommunications transactions and restructuring, real estate, and emerging growth companies.

Mr. Markowitz has extensive experience advising major telecommunications clients on all aspects of developing and sustaining telecommunications networks. His experience extends to counseling mature and startup companies on mergers and acquisitions, strategic joint ventures and business financing, including bankruptcy and workout issues. He also advises real estate clients in all areas of commercial real estate transactions, including financing, leasing, development and debt restructuring.

Mr. Markowitz received a B.A. with honors in 1976 from the University of Rochester, an M.P.A with highest honors in 1977 from the State University of New York at Albany, and his J.D in 1982 from The Washington College of Law of American University, where he was the editor of the Law Review. From 1978 to 1981, he was a Presidential Fellow assigned to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), where he researched and analyzed domestic monetary policy, alternative mortgage instruments, and international banking transactions.

Mr. Markowitz has published articles on topics relating to commercial real estate and banking law, and bankruptcy. He has frequently lectured on lender liability issues, corporate law, real estate law, banking law, bankruptcy, and restructuring matters.

He is a member of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia bars.

Joining Mr. Markowitz at Reed Smith is Susan Chasnov, an associate from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. Ms. Chasnov received her A.B. in 1996 from Duke University and her J.D. cum laude in 1999 from Duke University School of Law. The two have worked together at Morgan Lewis for the past two years. Ms. Chasnov is experienced in corporate financing and transactions, telecommunications transactions, securities, and mergers and acquisitions.
