Responsible Deployment of AI in BusinessSlaughter and May and ASI Data Science, the high-growth British Technology firm, have published Superhuman Resources, a joint white paper on the responsible deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in business.

We believe that AI could become the most transformative workplace technology of the 21st Century, with the associated need for business leaders to assure themselves that they are deploying AI effectively and responsibly.

Advanced AI systems are already being used to enhance our lives and to transform the way businesses operate. Gains in both computational capacity, and our understanding of how to exploit that capacity, mean that a form of “general artificial intelligence” – a truly cognitive system – could be created within our lifetimes. This will be revolutionary in a way few can presently imagine.

Superhuman Resources sets out a series of practical questions for businesses to address in respect of AI in the areas of governance and quality assurance, in addition to tackling crucial legal considerations. These include privacy and data processing legislation compliance, the potential for discriminatory outputs from AI systems and the fair allocation of risk.

This guidance is set against a regulatory backdrop that poses distinct challenges for policy makers and corporate governance. While the growth of AI is no different to that of other fields of innovation in respect of the need to develop ethics and laws simultaneously, it offers a real opportunity for businesses to shape and influence legal and regulatory frameworks as they begin to adapt to machine based processes, products and services.
