PHOENIX (LAWFUEL) – Joseph Joshua Wellington, 22, of Scottsdale, Ariz. and a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Tribe, was sentenced today to 68 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow. Wellington pleaded guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm on January 9, 2009.
On September 15, 2007, at a residence in Scottsdale on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Wellington was found by Salt River Police Officers to be in possession of a shotgun. Wellington had previously been convicted on June 27, 2005, of felony Aggravated Assault in federal court in Arizona making him ineligible to be in the possession of a firearm.
The investigation in this case was conducted by the Salt River Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution was handled by Thomas C. Simon, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
