Southern Cross and QE Health Cleared to Form a Joint Venture

LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – The Commerce Commission has cleared Southern Cross Health Trust and QE Hospital Limited to merge their respective private hospital operations in Rotorua.

Commission Chair Paula Rebstock said that the Commission was satisfied that the proposed acquisition would not have, or would not be likely to have, the effect of substantially lessening competition in any of the relevant markets.

Southern Cross operates a number of private surgical facilities throughout the country including a hospital in Rotorua. The Southern Cross hospital in Rotorua has two operating theatres and 26 in-patient beds and provides secondary elective surgical services to both day patients and in-patients.

QE Hospital Limited (trading as QE Health) is a private surgical hospital in Rotorua with one operating theatre and 21 in-patient beds. QE Health also provides secondary elective surgical services to day patients and in-patients.

A public version of the written decision will be available as soon as practicable on the Commission’s website, www.comcom.govt.nz, under Public Registers.
