TALLAHASSEE – LAW NEWS NETWORK – Attorney General Charlie Crist commended Governor Jeb Bush for signing into law a bill that establishes the Attorney General’s Child Predator CyberCrime Unit in Florida statutes.

The CyberCrime legislation, sponsored by Senator Victor Crist and Representative Gus Barreiro, establishes the CyberCrime Unit in Chapter 16 of the Florida Statutes. Prior to the legislation, Crist’s office took the initiative to create the unit as a pilot project to aggressively pursue those who solicit children online. Today’s legislation makes the unit a statutory part of the office.

“Governor Bush and the Legislature have acted to protect our children,” said Crist. “Those who target our children should understand that they are not welcome in Florida – their crimes will be stopped by our CyberCrime team and they will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

The Child Predator CyberCrime Unit has worked to arrest 19 offenders in less than 10 months. Working cooperatively on a statewide basis with local law enforcement agencies, federal agencies and state attorneys, the unit employs resources, expertise, teamwork and education throughout the state to stop the abuse of our children.
