TORONTO and CALGARY November 16, 2004 – LAWFUEL – Law, law firm, legal, attorney news – Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), one of Canada’s leading business law firms, today announced that Edward Rowe will be joining Blakes as a Tax Partner in its Calgary office.
“The Taxation Group in Calgary has been very busy, and we have been searching for lawyers to expand our tax practice,” said Jim Christie, the Firm’s Chairman. “Edward is a well-respected tax lawyer with excellent credentials, and we welcome him to the Blakes partnership.”
Edward Rowe’s practice focuses on the taxation of the resource industry. He is a frequent speaker and author on the tax issues facing that sector, and in 2003, was seconded to the Department of Finance in Ottawa as a Special Adviser to the Tax Legislation Division in respect of the taxation of resource income and corporate reorganizations. In addition to tax planning, Mr. Rowe practises tax litigation and has acted as co-counsel on behalf of major corporations in successful tax appeals at all levels of court including, most recently, the Federal Court of Appeal decision in Imperial Oil v. The Queen concerning the deduction of foreign currency borrowing costs.
Edward Rowe graduated from The University of Calgary Law School as the gold medallist, and articled to the Honourable Justice Major of the Supreme Court of Canada prior to his call to the Alberta Bar in 1996. Mr. Rowe is currently a partner at Couzin Taylor LLP, a tax law firm affiliated with Ernst & Young LLP.
Founded in 1856, Blakes has over 500 lawyers and offices in Canada, the United States, Europe and China. In October, and for the second consecutive year, Blakes was the only law firm to earn a place on the 2004 list of “Canada’s Top 100 Employers,” released by the national news magazine Maclean’s. In May 2004, Chambers and Partners Legal Publishers named Blakes “Canadian Law Firm of the Year.” The Firm’s signature “Blakes means business” is not just a catch phrase but a discipline that defines how Blakes helps clients achieve their business objectives.
