Ian will set up and develop a new service under the banner LBCompliance; Sarah joins to oversee an initiative for businesses in the UK that do not employ in-house legal teams; a service that will also dovetail with Ian’s work. Sarah will also be enhancing our LBCareers to expand our outplacement service for in-house lawyers who are under threat of redundancy or between roles, and will also be responsible for LBC Wise Counsel’s operations in Scotland.

About Ian Goulden

Ian worked as a solicitor in private practice in the North of England for 12 years before moving in-house with Ocean Group in 1990. He was appointed Legal Director for Ocean Group in 1996 and subsequently became Head of Legal for Exel, a FTSE 100 company, in 2000. By 2005 Ian was leading a team of 60 lawyers based in 17 countries, at which time Exel was acquired by Deutsche Post, the parent company of DHL. Ian then became Director of Legal Practice for DHL. He left them at the end of 2007 to set up a consultancy which specialises in advising companies on legal compliance and legal risk management.

“I am delighted to have this opportunity to work with LBC Wise Counsel and to establish cost effective compliance programming with in-house teams. This is a crucial part of the in-house role but often does not receive the attention it deserves.”

The aim is to bolster the resource for teams by helping in a range of activities including:

• Identifying any material legal and compliance risks that are not being adequately mitigated
• Prioritising those risks for mitigation action
• Creating mitigation action plans
• Educating staff through targeted training
• Putting in place means to measure the success of risk mitigation activities
• Making compliance part of the business culture
