HOUSTON- LAWFUEL – Law News Network –Aug. 24, 2006–Bracewell & Giuliani partner Jay Aldis will join the Texas Lawyer Annual Roundtable on Labor on Thursday, August 31 at the Magnolia Hotel in Houston. This CLE accredited event will be held from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

“There have been several significant changes in labor and employment law within the last year,” said Aldis. “Both attorneys and human resource managers need to understand how these changes affect their clients and companies in order to take appropriate measures to comply with the new laws.”

Among those changes that Aldis will discuss at the roundtable include the Burlington Northern decision recently passed down by the Supreme Court which imposes a lesser burden of proof on plaintiffs with regard to employer retaliation cases. “The Burlington case is one of the most significant decisions handed down by the court within the last decade,” said Aldis.

Also on slate for discussion will be the recent decision of the National Labor Relations Board with regard to broad, mandatory arbitration agreements in employee manuals, non-compete agreements and the protection of corporate confidential information and the significant changes in the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Another important topic Aldis also plans to discuss is the obligation and appropriate response that a human resources department must take when a disaster – either manmade or natural – occurs.

In addition to numerous covenant and non-compete cases, Aldis has litigated dozens of employment and civil rights lawsuits filed against employers. The lawsuits have included claims of age, disability and race discrimination, as well as sexual harassment and retaliation. He has also defended employers against claims of due process, excessive force, equal protection, false arrest and First Amendment violations, as well as whistleblower suits.

Additionally, Aldis was chosen by the Texas District and County Attorneys Association to author the employment law chapter in the association’s forms book and has also served as an instructor at the Harris County Sheriff’s Department Academy.
