Holland & Knight’s national Intellectual Property Group adds a prominent biotech patent lawyer to its practice through the acquisition of the Washington, D.C.-based law firm Millstein & Taylor, P.C. Name partner and noted life sciences attorney Larry S. Millstein, Ph.D. joins the firm’s Washington, D.C., office as partner. Also joining Holland & Knight is name partner and transactional lawyer Robin Taylor, who will practice in the firm’s Northern Virginia office in the Mergers & Acquisitions Group.

Millstein’s arrival is the latest in a series of strategic lateral additions by the firm’s IP group, which added eight lawyers to its practice within the last year. Millstein holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and chemistry, and has extensive experience in technically complex matters, particularly relating to molecular biology, bio-research instrumentation, genomics, expression profiling, proteomics, array technologies, HTS technologies, bioinformatics, drug discovery, biomarkers, pharmaceutical agents and formulations, transgenics, bioMEMS, certain aspects of nanotechnology, and single molecule technology. His practice focuses on technology and intellectual property portfolio development and strategy, including technology assessment, forecasting and counseling; patentability assessment; patent preparation, prosecution and acquisition; IP licensing, due diligence, and litigation counseling.

“Larry is widely respected in the legal and biotech communities, and has impressive technical and litigation expertise,” said Josh Krumholz, the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group leader. “He will play a major role in accelerating the expansion of our biotech practice, which is a key growth area for the firm.”

Millstein is a registered U.S. Patent Attorney and is a member of the Bars of the District of Columbia, the C.A.F.C. and the U.S. Supreme Court. He also is an adjunct professor in the Department of Biochemistry Molecular and Cellular Biology at Georgetown University, and he is chairman of the Board of Directors of the Georgetown University Program in Entrepreneurial Biotechnology.

Before founding Millstein & Taylor, Millstein was senior patent counsel at Human Genome Sciences. Before taking up the practice of law, Millstein was a scientist for more than 10 years and carried out research in biology at the at the Smithsonian Institution and in chemistry and molecular biology at UC-San Diego, the Scripps Research Institute, and the University of Rochester. In addition to his academic publications, Millstein is an inventor on several patent applications on micro-arrays and on polynucleotide amplification methods.

Millstein holds a B.S. in chemistry from SUNY-CCNY, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry and molecular biology from the University of California-San Diego. He earned his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law and is a graduate of the school’s Patent Law Specialty Track Program.

Robin Taylor, co-founder of Millstein Taylor, is a highly regarded business lawyer and certified public accountant with more than 20 years of experience in matters relating to business transactions, taxation, regulatory compliance, intellectual property law, and employment law.

Taylor’s practice includes counseling technology companies, especially early and mid-stage companies, as well as advising on complex commercial transactions, business entities and operational structures, mergers and reorganizations, and debt and equity financing. She has significant experience in joint ventures, licenses, sales partnering arrangements, and mergers and acquisitions. In addition, Taylor has negotiated large and complex transactions; handled financing, leasing and purchasing of investment real estate; and counseled clients on employment law, including ERISA compliance. She also has experience setting up technology incubators and other technology development-based, IP-oriented enterprises.

Taylor earned her B.S.B.A. from the University of North Carolina and received her J.D. with honors from the University of North Carolina Law School in 1986. She is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Master of Laws in Taxation degree from Georgetown University School of Law.
