NEW YORK– LAWFUEL – The Law Newswire –Nancy Morawetz, a law professor at New York University, has been honored with a prestigious award for her role as a leading immigrants’ rights campaigner and her scholarship in the field of immigration law.
The LexisNexis Matthew Bender® Daniel Levy Memorial Award commemorates the life of Daniel Levy, a national leader in the fields of immigration law, publishing and scholarship, and is given annually to the individual who has contributed most to the field.
As the 2007 winner of the award, Prof. Morawetz will be presented with a $2,000 cash prize and an elegant crystal trophy to celebrate her work.
Helping disadvantaged immigrants
In addition to the impressive track record of academic publications to her name, Prof. Morawetz also runs the New York Immigrant Rights Clinic, where some of the country’s brightest law students work for free to protect the rights of individual immigrants. Not only has this advocacy been of enormous help to individuals – many of whom were facing very difficult circumstances – but the clinic’s case work has also set new legal theories and precedents that have resonated across the country.
The recognition of Prof. Morawetz’ work is especially noteworthy as it comes at a time when immigration matters are again at the top of the national agenda and Congress seeks to devise new legislation to address citizenship issues for recent immigrants.
“It is hard to think of a more deserving winner because Prof. Morawetz’ work brings together all of the qualities and achievements the award was created to recognize,” said George Bearese, vice president of editorial and content development at Matthew Bender. “Not only is Nancy one of the nation’s foremost scholars in the field of immigration law, she works to deliver that legal thinking to the those who need it most through her pioneering clinic.”
Dean of the NYU law faculty, Professor Richard Revesz, said, “NYU Law School takes great pride in the outstanding work that Nancy Morawetz has done on behalf of immigrants. As a lawyer, teacher, and scholar, she has made immensely important contributions. The NYU Immigrant Rights Clinic, which Nancy created and teaches, has won major victories for individual clients and has set precedents that help numerous individuals.”
The award will be presented at the American Immigration Lawyers Association Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida on June 13, 2007.
