LAWFUEL – The Law Newswire – The Lawyer reports that the deals slowdown hasn’t bothered Mayer Brown. It’s rebranded, opened in Brazil with a raid on Clifford Chance and hired corporate rainmaker William Charnley – all in a matter of weeks.
Corporate rainmakers are in short supply. However, Charnley’s performance at McDermott Will & Emery’s London office over the past decade has proved that you can build up a personalised and portable practice.
Mayer Brown in London is cock-a-hoop, with all sorts of talk about star strikers and so on. The fact that the two firms are Chicago rivals adds a certain frisson to the proceedings. Certainly, Charnley’s practice in hedge funds and private equity slots nicely into London’s more institutionalised listed business.
Charnley himself is clearly convinced by the ambitious global vision senior partner Paul Maher has for Mayer Brown. “I don’t want a title,” Charnley told us, “but I do want to feel that I’m part of something that’s going somewhere.”
Driven, high-billing, larger than life: if you didn’t know any different, you’d think Paul Maher had just hired his twin.
