National law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart LLP (K&L) announced that John F. Spinello, Jr. has joined K&L’s Newark, NJ office as Of Counsel. Prior to joining K&L, Mr. Spinello was Associate Deputy General Counsel for the United States Environmental Protection Agency, where he worked closely with former Administrator Whitman and senior Bush administration officials.
Mr. Spinello concentrates his practice in environmental and natural resources law and government affairs. Building on his experience counseling senior federal and state government officials on a wide range of environmental and economic development matters, Mr. Spinello’s practice focuses on compliance counseling, environmental litigation, and legislative and regulatory advocacy.
Mr. Spinello’s significant EPA experience complements Newark’s market-leading environmental practice, headed by William H. Hyatt, Jr. and Brian S. Montag. K&L’s team in Newark is noted for its work on precedent-setting environmental justice and multi-party cases, and extensive Superfund experience. Firmwide, K&L has over 60 environmental lawyers located across its 10 offices.
Additionally, Mr. Spinello’s experience in New Jersey state government offers another valuable asset to K&L environmental clients. As Assistant Counsel to the Governor and in several posts in the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, he was successful in negotiating the settlement of multi-media enforcement cases, building consensus for regulatory action and forging legislative coalitions.
