Legal Education – Winstead Scholarship Program Launching in 2008 to Target Diverse Candidates

Dallas, Dec. 17, 2007 — LAWFUEL – Legal Newswire – Texas law firm Winstead PC is initiating the Winstead Juris Doctor Scholarship Program targeting first-year, top minority candidates at three Texas law schools including: The University of Texas School of Law, The University of Houston Law Center, and Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. At each school, the scholarship will consist of a one-time grant of $20,000 and a position in the 2009 Winstead Summer Associate Program.

A portion of the grant will be awarded to the law school student interest group of each scholarship recipient’s choice; a portion of the scholarship will be presented to each recipient when the winners are formally announced; another portion of the grant will consist of a signing bonus to be disbursed at the start of each recipient’s Summer Associate position in 2009 after their second year of law school; and the remaining amount will be awarded as a signing bonus to be distributed at the start of the student’s permanent position with the firm.

The scholarship selection process begins with a written application, a 500 word personal statement, a transcript of first-semester grades, and the candidate’s resume. Candidates will be encouraged to submit a written legal product. Winstead attorneys will then conduct on-campus interviews with finalists from each school and one finalist from each school will be chosen as the scholarship winner.

The firm plans to host introductory presentations for the Winstead Juris Doctor Scholarship Program at each of the selected law schools in January, 2008, with applications being due in February 2008. Interviews will be held on campus during early March and the winners will be notified by the end of March. In April, the three scholarship recipients will be invited to visit the office where they will work during Winstead’s Summer Associate Program.
