Prominent Real Estate Lawyer Michael Haas Joins Jones Day

CLEVELAND– LAWFUEL –Michael J. Haas, a prominent real estate lawyer whose practice includes national retailers and funds, has joined the Cleveland office of international law firm Jones Day as a partner.

Mr. Haas has worked on a wide range of real estate equity ventures and debt financings in all asset categories. Formerly a partner and co-chair of the real estate practice at Cleveland’s Roetzel & Andress, he also counsels clients on real estate acquisitions and dispositions, commercial and retail leasing, and office and industrial transactions, as well as advising on organizational and regulatory issues regarding venture capital funds, hedge funds, and funds of funds.

Mr. Haas’ experience includes representation of national retailers in leasing, acquisitions and dispositions; real estate funds and their national properties; REITs in property acquisitions; developers and homebuilders; and lenders, pension funds, equity funds, bond funds and funds of funds in their real estate interests.

Selected as an “Ohio Super Lawyers – Rising Star” by Law & Politics magazine and Cincinnati Magazine in 2005, 2006 and 2007, Mr. Haas is a member of the American Bar Association, Cleveland Bar Association, Cuyahoga County Bar Association, International Council of Shopping Centers and National Association of Industrial & Office Properties. His community affiliations include service on the Cleveland Jewish Federation’s Young Leadership Board, co-chairmanship of the Israel Bonds Young Leadership Board and membership in the UJC National Young Leadership Cabinet and on the Cleveland Hebrew Schools’ Board of Trustees. Mr. Haas is a graduate of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (1994 J.D.) and Syracuse University (1991 B.A. in Political Science).

Davis Polk Law Firm Expands Beijing Office – China Business & Law

BEIJING–LAWFUEL – Davis Polk & Wardwell today announced that Howard Zhang will join the firm on April 7, 2008 as a partner in the Beijing office. Mr. Zhang will advise clients on cross-border securities, mergers and acquisitions and strategic investment transactions. He joins the firm from O’Melveny & Myers, where he was Managing Partner of their Beijing office and a member of the Mergers & Acquisitions Practice.

Mr. Zhang, a former diplomat with the Chinese government, is internationally recognized for his expertise in venture capital and private equity transactions. He has extensive experience working with leading private equity firms, venture capital funds, investment banks and multinational corporations. He is routinely listed as a leading lawyer in directories, including Chambers and Legal 500. According to Chambers Global 2008, clients and peers refer to Mr. Zhang as the “guru of private equity.”

Davis Polk’s Beijing office opened in February 2007 to expand the presence and reach of the firm’s broad and highly successful practice there. The firm was lead counsel for the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) on its $21.6 billion dual-listed initial public offering, the largest IPO in history.
