In an unprecedented market move, leading Japanese legal powerhouse TMI Associates has become the first major Tokyo-headquartered law firm to launch a standalone, full-scale outpost in Oceania, choosing Sydney as its beachhead.
The launch marks TMI’s 15th international hub and follows a calculated trial run: a year-long integration embedded directly inside premier independent Australian firm Johnson Winter Slattery (JWS).
Why Australia, and Why Right Now?
The expansion mirrors a massive geopolitical and economic pivot across the Asia-Pacific. Speaking to Asia Business Law Journal, TMI Associates Managing Partner Katsuro Tanaka (pictured) emphasized that bilateral ties between Tokyo and Canberra have hit record highs.
“The Japan-Australia relationship has never been stronger, with deepening co-operation in defence and economic security,” Tanaka stated. “Japanese investment in Australia also remains robust and is diversifying across a growing range of sectors. We saw this as the right moment to establish a local presence and better serve our clients on the ground.”
The Solo Pioneer: Who Is Leading the Charge?
Partner Masayuki Nagai steps in as director and principal lawyer to spearhead the new operation. While Nagai represents the firm’s sole resident practitioner on Australian soil for now, significant reinforcements are on the horizon. Backed directly by TMI’s flagship Tokyo engine room, local headcounts are slated to scale alongside climbing regional deal volume.
Beyond the Niche: The Multi-Sector M&A Play
Rather than pigeonholing the branch into standard cross-border advisory, TMI is positioning the Sydney office as a full-spectrum corporate player. Key practice drivers right out of the gate include:
- Cross-border M&A and corporate structuring
- Commercial real estate investment
- Complex employment and industrial relations
- Commercial distribution and supplier disputes
- Regulatory compliance across financial services and life sciences
The JWS Alliance Remains Bulletproof
Despite opening independent doors on 9 September, Tanaka confirmed TMI is doubling down on its strategic pact with JWS rather than cutting ties. The dynamic blends JWS’s native regulatory and corporate muscle with TMI’s tier-one Rolodex of blue-chip Japanese enterprises, bridging commercial culture and local execution.
