DENVER (LAWFUEL) – John Lehman, age 41, of Lakewood, Colorado, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver late yesterday, charging him with 14 Metro Denver bank robberies, and 1 attempted bank robbery, United States Attorney Troy Eid and FBI Special Agent in Charge James Davis announced today. Lehman had been called “Bank Robber BOB” by the FBI. He is presently in federal custody.
Lehman was arrested based on a Criminal Complaint on September 30th, 2008.
According to the indictment, Lehman has been charged with:
1) The June 13, 2008 robbery of the Provenant Federal Credit Union, located at 4001 West 16th Avenue, Denver.
2) The July 10, 2008 robbery of the Provenant Federal Credit Union, located at 4001 West 16th Avenue, Denver.
3) The July 20, 2008 robbery of U.S. Bank, located at 910 West Cherry Street, Louisville.
4) The July 21, 2008 robbery of Academy Bank, located at 13429 West Coalmine
Avenue, Littleton.
5) The July 23, 2008 robbery of TCF Bank, located at 2084 South Broadway, Denver.
6) The July 28, 2008 robbery of TCF Bank, located at 6428 Gardenia Street, Arvada.
7) The August 14, 2008 robbery of Wells Fargo Bank, located at 3900 Wadsworth Boulevard, Wheat Ridge.
8) The August 18, 2008 robbery of Wells Fargo Bank, located at 1955 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver.
9) The August 23, 2008 robbery of the TCF Bank, located at 7206 Federal Boulevard, Westminster.
10) The August 25, 2008 robbery of First Bank, located at 8280 South Holly, Centennial.
11) The August 26, 2008 robbery of Premier Members Credit Union, located at 680 East 120th Avenue, Northglenn.
12) The August 28, 2008 robbery of U.S. Bank, located at 10520 Melody Drive, Northglenn.
13) The September 9, 2008 robbery of B.C.S. Community Credit Union, located at 3835 Newland Street, Wheat Ridge.
14) The September 17, 2008 robbery of the TCF Bank, located at 2084 South Broadway, Denver.
15) The September 19, 2008 attempted bank robbery of the Provenant Federal Credit Union, located at 4001 West 16th Avenue, Denver.
“Colorado has more than 200 bank robberies a year – one of the highest rates in the nation – and we take these cases very seriously,” said U.S. Attorney Troy Eid.
“The members of the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force are a team of dedicated, professional, and persistent investigators,” said Denver FBI Special Agent in Charge James Davis. “We appreciate their efforts in making our community safer.”
Lehman faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each of the first 14 counts of bank robbery. He faces up to 25 years in prison for count 15, as he assaulted a bank employee during the robbery. In addition, Lehman faces a fine of up to $250,000 for each count, as well as restitution.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force. The task force includes: The FBI, the Denver Police Department, the Aurora Police Department, the Lakewood Police Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), and the Federal Protective Service (FPS).
The case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Brown.
The charges are only allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
