2 April 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Marcos Daniel Jiménez, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; R. Alexander Acosta, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division; and Michael S. Clemens, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today that defendant, James Tackticos, of Miramar, Florida, was sentenced in federal court in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, by United States District Court Judge Daniel T.K. Hurley to a term of imprisonment of eighteen (18) months for violating federal civil rights laws and to pay restitution in the amount of $7,700.
The Information charged Tackticos, while employed as a road patrol deputy with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office, with pulling over immigrants for either DUI or other traffic infractions in the Lake Worth area of Palm Beach County on six (6) occasions in 2003, and that on each occasion, Tackticos stole cash from the individuals stopped. The amounts of money alleged to be taken ranged from $50 to $5,434.
Pursuant to the terms of the plea agreement, Tackticos relinquished his Florida Law Enforcement certification, and agreed to pay restitution to each of the six (6) victims. Based on statements made in court, the restitution payment ($7,700) will be paid by the defense forthwith.
Mr. Jiménez commended the investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Lourie and Trial Attorney Christine Dunn, Civil Rights Division, Department of Justice.
