23 May – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California announced that Dennis Franklin Hunter, 32, of Nevada City, California, and Roy Bryan Mercer, 40, of Eureka, California, were sentenced to prison yesterday by United States District Court Judge Fern Smith. Each defendant was sentenced to serve a term of 78 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release for their role in illegally growing 1,000 or more marijuana plants and conspiracy to launder the proceeds.
Mr. Hunter and Mr. Mercer pleaded guilty in July 2003 to two counts each, one of conspiring to manufacture 1,000 or more marijuana plants and one count of conspiring to conduct illegal financial transactions involving the sale of the marijuana. The defendants were originally indicted on March 29, 2002.
The conviction is the result of an investigation by agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration and IRS Criminal Investigation. Dave Hall is the Assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted the case with the assistance of Karen Morgan and Tania Korn
