Bert Fields has been Tom Cruise’s lawyer for much of his 83 years. And there’s no doubting the lawyer can still write a damn good letter. His latest, to the National Enquirer, threatens defamation over an article the newspaper wrote labelling Mr Fields’ client “a monster”.
The Tom Cruise divorce has preoccupied the media and now that’s settled, the vapour trail of lawsuits against people like the National Enquirer is continuing.
According to CBSNews, Cruise’s lawyer has sent a letter to the Enquirer’s publisher threatening a lawsuit over their claim that Tom Cruise, the Scientologist, multi-married movie star, is a “monster”. The Enquirer story referred to alleged “abuse” and “humiliation” by Cruise in the way he allegedly acted towards former wife Katie Holmes.
Bert Fields, the legendary 83 year old Hollywood lawyer who has long acted for Cruise, sent a letter to the newspaper claiming the story was “false and vicious lies”.
Mr Fields wrote that the story would cause Cruise “hundreds of millions of dollars of professional and personal damages, for which we intend to hold American Media, and everyone who participated in the perpetuation of this scurrilous attack, jointly and severally liable.”
“Your cover announces, as a fact, that ‘THE REAL TOM CRUISE IS A MONSTER.’ Mr. Cruise is certainly not a ‘monster.’ He is a caring father, a hardworking actor and, above all, an honest, decent man,” Fields wrote in the letter.
“Contrary to your blaring headlines, Mr. Cruise has not engaged in any ‘abuse’ or ‘humiliation’ of Katie Holmes. Nor has he ever subjected her to any ‘punishments,'” he added. “Ms. Holmes did not lead a ‘tortured life’ with Mr. Cruise. Despite their divorce, their relationship was generally a loving one.”
