ATLANTA, Nov. 9 LAWFUEL – Law News, Law Jobs Network — Powell Goldstein LLP is pleased to
welcome R. Joseph Burby, IV as an Atlanta-based partner in its Special
Matters & Investigations Practice Group. He joins a multidisciplinary team that includes former federal prosecutors, securities enforcement lawyers and attorneys with substantive industry expertise.
Burby comes to the firm after serving for the past four and a half
years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia,
where he successfully prosecuted numerous cases involving public
corruption, health care fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, tax
fraud and other complex financial crimes. Burby was involved in several
high-profile prosecutions including the cases against Centennial Olympic
Park bomber Eric Rudolph and the former President of Morris Brown College, Dr. Dolores Cross. Burby recently received The John Marshall Award, the Department of Justice’s highest award offered to attorneys, for his work on the Rudolph case.
Burby also has significant experience representing companies and
individuals in government investigations and regulatory enforcement matters
and in developing and assessing corporate compliance programs. Prior to
joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he was an associate in the antitrust
and investigations practice group of another major Atlanta law firm. Burby also previously served as a Senior Assistant District Attorney for Fulton County, where he was a member of the elite Major Felonies Unit which prosecutes murder and other complex, high-profile criminal cases.
At Powell Goldstein, Burby will focus his practice on white collar
criminal defense, government and internal corporate investigations, civil
fraud litigation with the government and corporate compliance program
counseling. He will work closely with the firm’s Health Care and
Securities, Corporate & Fiduciary Litigation practice groups, among others.

Burby holds a J.D., with honors, from the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill School of Law and also a B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
