Britain’s Top 12 Barristers – Highest-Earning Barristers and What They Really Make

Ben Thomson, LawFuel contributor

Since I wrote about Britain’s highest-paid barristers a year ago, the select group of the UK’s top barristers continues to expand, with fees commanded that rival top CEOs.

What we didn’t report on was the sort of money received by the elite UK barristers, apart from quoting the Legal Futures report from 2018 that 125 UK barristers earned over £1million all those years ago.

The UK’s highest-paid barristers are more than just courtroom stars. They are strategic advisors, thought leaders, and, increasingly, agents of change in a rapidly evolving legal market.

However there is little publicly available information aout barrister earnings.

With top hourly billing rates hitting £5000 an hour or more, a barrister billing 1500 hours a year (perfectly common for a top law partner) brings home £7.5m. Remember though that barristers have to pay their Chambers and sometimes a percentage as well, and so a safe estimate may include up to 25 percent for such costs.

Sumption
Image: The Guardian

Lord Sumption holds the record for the highest fee earned in Brtitish cases, charging Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich £7.8 million for his defence in the 2012 case Berezovsky v Abramovich.

Attorney General Richard Hermer KC, now Lord Hermer, has represented an array of dissidents ranging from Gerry Evans (at the ‘nicer’ end to Islamic extremists, and was a top-earning barrister representing such activist, despite playing a role in the odd decision over the Chagos Islands ‘return’, recieving the oppropribum from commentators like Douglas Murray in The Spectator.

A UK Bar Council report from November 2023 showed the now standard rates for male lawyers’ exceeding their femaile counterparts, icnluding at the Bar.

The figure for KCs shows that the typical range of gross earnings for female silks (the box) sits between around £200k and £600k. For male silks, the range starts higher at around £250k and extends to £900k. The maximum gross earnings for male barristers (the whisker line above the box) is considerably higher than the maximum for female barristers (excluding outliers)3. The overlap of the boxes shows that not all male KCs earn more than female KCs, but their earning potential is visibly higher.

As client expectations shift toward value, efficiency, and innovation, those who combine technical mastery with adaptability and influence will continue to dominate both the earnings tables and the headlines.

We looked at who the top earners were and sorted 12 to them in the following list. They are not in order of earnings simply for the reasons given – the figures are estimates based on our best knowledge and we are simply listing the creme-de-la creme of the English bar by both earnings and reputation.

Barrister Earnings : A Snapshot

Top Commercial KCs: Command fees upwards of £1.5 million annually.

Junior Barristers at Elite Chambers: First-year earnings can reach up to £360,000, significantly outpacing newly qualified solicitors at top US firms in London.

Criminal and Family Law Barristers: Often start with earnings around £20,000, highlighting the disparity within the profession. (lawcareers.net, lawfuel.com)

At a Glance: what Barristers Earn

  • Pupillage (minimum awards): Around £23,000 in London and just over £21,000 outside London, with leading commercial sets commonly paying £70,000–£85,000.
  • Early‑career juniors: Many juniors in mainstream practice earn roughly £40,000–£100,000 in their first years, with large differences between commercial, family and criminal work.
  • Elite commercial juniors: At top commercial sets, first‑year earnings sit around £150,000, rising to about £250,000 in year two and over £300,000 in year three, with exceptional juniors at some sets reported up to roughly £360,000 in year one.
  • Typical Bar median: Across all practice areas, recent Bar data suggests median gross incomes for self‑employed barristers are around the low‑to‑mid £100,000s, with many earning substantially less and a minority significantly more.
  • Publicly funded juniors: Criminal and family legal‑aid juniors can see first‑year earnings as low as £10,000–£20,000 despite heavy workloads and long hours.
  • Million‑pound elite: Only a small percentage—often estimated at around 2%—of barristers, mainly leading commercial and tax KCs, achieve seven‑figure gross earnings in any given year.
  • Gender and ethnicity gaps: Women barristers’ median incomes sit at roughly 70% of men’s, (the same tired-old issue) and barristers from minority ethnic backgrounds also earn materially less on average, with gaps widest at senior levels.

What Drives These Barristers’ Premium Earnings?

Barristers don’t sit at the top of their profession through luck, good schools and connections – all of which unquestionably help in many cases – but through specific factors.

Those factors range from the areas of specialty they have chosen to work in to the Chambers support available to them. Here are five key factors affecting their commercial success:

  • Specialisation: The highest-paid barristers are almost always specialists in complex, high-value areas—commercial, tax, construction, and public law—where stakes and client budgets are largest.
  • Reputation and Track Record: A proven history of success, especially in precedent-setting or high-profile cases, allows these barristers to command premium fees.
  • Market Demand: London’s global status as a litigation hub, combined with international arbitration and cross-border disputes, keeps demand high for elite advocates.
  • Professional Recognition: Rankings in Chambers UK, Legal 500, and awards such as “Star at the Bar” or inclusion in influential people lists reinforce market value and visibility.
  • Clerking and Chambers Support: Top clerking teams (e.g., at 4 Stone Buildings, Serle Court) play a crucial role in securing high-value instructions and managing complex caseloads.

The growth in specialized legal work and high-profile cases will continue to drive earnings. The demand for expertise in areas like international law, human rights, and complex commercial litigation remains strong.
