Patrick A. Salvi II, an attorney who represents victims of car accidents in Chicago and Illinois, urged parents to talk to their teen drivers about safe driving habits in light of a new report that has found speeding to be the primary factor in one third of fatal car crashes involving teens.

“As our law firm has seen in cases we have handled, speeding by drivers of any age can carry serious consequences,” said Salvi, a partner at the leading Chicago personal injury law firm of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C.

“Raising teens’ awareness about the dangers of speeding can help to establish an approach to safe driving that stays with them throughout their lives and helps to prevent accidents, injuries and deaths,” he said.

Salvi referred to the report by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), “Speeding-Related Fatal Crashes Among Teen Drivers and Opportunities for Reducing the Risks,” which was published in late June.

According to the report, speeding as a primary factor in fatal teen driver accidents increased from 30 percent in 2000 to 33 percent in 2011. Total teen-driver car accident fatalities have gone down over the same period.

Susan Ferguson, the author of the report, said speeding is more prevalent among male teenagers, at night, and in the presence of other teen passengers.

This suggests that some teens may speed because they give in to peer pressure or want to “show off,” Salvi said.

“Nobody should lose a loved one simply because a driver decided to see how fast their car could go and wound up causing an accident,” said the attorney.

Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C. helps car accident victims and their families to obtain compensation for their losses through personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits against negligent or reckless drivers.

Because many teens are taking driver’s education over the summer, now is an ideal time to talk to them about developing safe driving habits, Salvi said.

“Teenagers really do listen to their parents and other adults in their lives,” he said. “Any time spent advising a teenage driver that, by speeding, they are risking their own safety and the safety of others is time well spent.”
