Clyde & Co ranked 11 in international arbitration global 100 list

(LAWFUEL) – Clyde & Co LLP has been ranked 11th in the world in this year’s ‘GAR 30’ table; an extensively researched listing of the top 30 arbitration practices in the world.

The GAR (Global Arbitration Review) 30, is part of the annual GAR top 100 and is considered an authoritative and objective annual guide to “approved” specialist arbitration firms. The report lists the top 100 law firms in the world based on reputation, recent work and experience.

GAR describes Clyde & Co as one of the “stocks to watch” and notes that “contentious work is Clyde & Co’s bread and butter.”

Several of Clyde & Co’s industry specialisms were singled out for special praise in the report: “The firm’s great strength is in the fields of insurance, reinsurance and transport, in which it regularly earns first-tier rankings, with more than 50 partners engaged in high-level, milestone insurance and reinsurance disputes in all corners of the market.”

The review also noted that “[Clyde & Co’s] dedicated aviation and space team is one of the most sought after in the world.”

Significant Clyde & Co cases highlighted in the report include a high-profile ICC oil arbitration led by partner Ben Knowles on behalf of the Yemen Government, valued at several billion US dollars and involving Clyde & Co’s London, Dubai and Paris offices, and a US$2billion matter for Petrobras, led by the firm’s head of Latin America, Stirling Leech. In all, 15 Clyde & Co arbitrators received special mention in the report.

Speaking about the types of challenges cross-cultural international arbitration can bring, Ben Knowles commented with relation to the Yemen arbitration: “Although this was an ICC case heard in London, requiring hundreds of pages of detailed submissions in writing, our clients were more accustomed to communicating all their instructions orally. Bridging this cultural gap was one of the many interesting aspects of this fascinating case.”

Clyde & Co senior partner, Michael Payton, said: “We are extremely pleased that Clyde & Co has been ranked number 11 for arbitration globally. The results are a great reflection of our collective and international expertise in this area.”
