Corporate law expert joins Board of The College of Law Western Australia

Minter Ellison Partner, Laurie Shervington, joins Board of Australia’s newest College of Law

February 11, 2008: Minter Ellison Partner Laurie Shervington who brings 35 years’ corporate law experience to the Board of The College of Law Western Australia, was announced as a new director by the College’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Michael Cole.

Mr Cole said Mr Shervington would bring invaluable experience in all critical facets of corporate law as well as law reform and government advisory expertise to the College.

“Not only does Laurie have a solid background in corporate law but he is a member of the legal sub-committee of the Corporation and Markets Advisory Committee for the Federal Government,” he said.

“He was also the inaugural Regional General Counsel of the Western Australian Regional Office of ASIC and as a result has a detailed understanding of the function and role of ASIC in the marketplace.”

Mr Cole said Mr Shervington frequently presented to professional and industry groups in Western Australia on the operation of the Corporations and ASIC Acts.

“Laurie has an understanding of corporate law not just from his role as Partner at Minter Ellison and his involvement with corporate law’s key institutions but from his ‘client side’ experience as a chairman and non-executive director of two listed companies.”

“He has a 360 degree understanding of the subject incorporating its theory and its practice from the point of view of all stakeholders and his uniquely comprehensive perspective will undoubtedly benefit The College of Law Western Australia.”

Mr Shervington said “I am delighted to be joining the Board of The College of Law Western Australia, particularly during its formative years, which is both a welcome challenge and an opportunity to contribute to the educational development of newcomers to the Legal Profession.”

Mr Shervington joins Chair Ms Alison Gaines (Gerard-Daniels) and fellow directors Professor Gabriel Moens (Murdoch University); Mr Joe Catanzariti (Clayton Utz) and Mr Neville Carter (The College of Law) on The College of Law Western Australia Pty Ltd board.

The College of Law Western Australia provides practical legal training for law graduates seeking admission as a solicitor. The program leads to admission in NSW followed by mutual recognition in WA. The College is currently awaiting the passage of the Legal Profession Bill 2007 through the Parliament of Western Australia in order to seek accreditation for a Western Australian-based program.
