The New, High Profile Barristers With CVs You Just Can’t Ignore

Former Commerce Commission The New High Profile Barristers With CVs You Just Can't IgnoreChief Dr Mark Berry is the latest senior legal figure to set up in private practice following the end of his tenure at Comcom.

His new website talks of his speciality (surprise, surprise) in competition and consumer law and economic regulation.

Speaking like all good, authoritative sites, it does so in the third person:

“He is a former partner of Bell Gully and is also a former consultant of Chapman Tripp. He has been in practice as a barrister from 2002. Mark’s practice has focused on all aspects of merger and restrictive trade practices matters (including cartels) under the Commerce Act. He has also acted extensively on electricity regulation matters.”

Dr Berry ended his role at the Commission in May, having chosen not to pursue a third, five year term, replaced by fellow Power List member Anna Rawling (pictured below) as The New High Profile Barristers With CVs You Just Can't IgnoreLawFuel had predicted.

Dr Berry may be best remembered at the commission for declining to clear the takeover of Sky TV by Vodafone, or to authorise the merger of NZME and Stuff Ltd, both of which have lead to intense scrutiny and commentary, apart from legal challenge.

Chris Finlayson QC

The New High Profile Barristers With CVs You Just Can't IgnoreFormer Attorney General Chris Finlayson QC has evidently been enjoying a largely politics-free return to the bar at Bankside Chambers as he had always planned.

“It has always been my intention to return to the Bar. Litigation has been my life. I never intended to be a professional politician so, having done what I wanted to do in Parliament, it was always a case of back to the Bar I would go,” he told LawTalk a month after announcing his intention to leave Parliament last November.

After leaving Bell Gully in 2003 he established Barristers.Comm with other barristers in Wellington before being elected to Parliament in 2005.

“I never considered myself out of the profession. Technically, I was head of the profession and I was an Attorney-General with a deep interest in the law, and so I kept a very close eye on what was going on. Some people are political lawyers but I was always a lawyer in politics,” he said to LawTalk.
