How One Lawyer Is Making A Difference For Under-Privileged School Kids

Mike Morse is a lawyer on the make – making a difference to underprivileged children whose law firm is to invest over a quarter million dollars to provide school supplies for Detroit’s under privileged.

The proposal is for Mike Morse’s firm, which has joined with a not-for-profit group called “Kids in Need Foundation“, to buy backpacks and distribute them to 23,000 of the Detroit area’s school children.

The $20 backpacks were loaded with markers, erasers, pencils and notebooks; things some students are lucky to have secondhand, if at all. “I think it teaches [the kids] that there are people out there in the community that care about them,” Morse says in a video about the firm’s donation made by Sean O’Grady. “They want them to succeed, that want them to win at life.”

His law firm firm is also currently raising additional funds to provide backpacks and school supplies for kids the initial donation didn’t reach.

The initiative had a trial run in May, when the Mike Morse Law Firm brought 400 backpacks to students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Wayne Elementary School, CBS Detroit reported. When it was a success, Morse sought to grow the project to reach more students in need.

“I thought, ‘Let’s do this in a bigger way. Let’s find out how many kids there are in the Detroit Public School system, K through 5 range,’” he said. “We found out there was 23,000 of them and my law firm said, let’s do this.”
