Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C. announces that David G. Tucker, of counsel in the firm’s Pensacola office, received the 2003 Ethics Award from the Florida Association of County Attorneys.

Tucker, a former Escambia County attorney, received the Ethics Award for acting as a whistle blower against the Escambia County Commission for violations of Florida’s open meeting laws. He was commended for not compromising his legal opinions and not becoming complicit in the unlawful acts that occurred while he served as county attorney. Tucker resigned in 2002 after a nine-year post, and he later provided grand jury testimony and testified as a prosecution witness. To date, the Escambia County criminal investigation has led to the conviction of four suspended or former county commissioners, including the former chairman of the board.

“David Tucker acted on his principles when he recognized that the ethical and legal environment in the county commission was deteriorating and helped the authorities expose criminal wrongdoing,” said Richard I. Lott, resident director of Miller Canfield’s Pensacola office. “This award is a reflection of his integrity and is well-deserved.”

Tucker received his law degree from the University of Florida Levin College of Law and his A.B., with distinction, from the University of Michigan. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Northern and Middle Districts of Florida. He is active in the American Bar Association, Florida Bar Association, Escambia-Santa Rosa Bar Association, and is past president of the Florida Association of County Attorneys.

In 1990, he was honored for his Outstanding Contribution in Civil Court by the Second Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program, and was the 1991 recipient of the Florida Bar President’s Award for Pro Bono Service. He holds positions on the Success by 6 Community Leadership Council, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club, Fiesta of Five Flags, Rotary Club of Pensacola, and was a participant in Leadership Pensacola, 1994-95.
