Noted attorney Ricky Raven is Firm’s first African-American Practice Group Leader

HOUSTON -LAWFUEL – The international law firm Thompson & Knight LLP has named partner Ricky A. Raven as the Trial Practice Group Leader in the Firm’s Houston Office. Mr. Raven is the first African-American named to this position in the Firm’s 120-year history.

A native of Beaumont, Texas, Mr. Raven currently serves as a member of the Firm’s Management Committee and the Executive Committee of the Houston Office, as well as Co-Chairman of the Firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

“Ricky is a leader in all facets of his professional and community life. He is well-known for his focus on teamwork, business development, and mentoring of young attorneys,” says Pete Riley, Managing Partner of the Firm. “We are confident that his management skills, commitment to the Firm, and dedication to diversity and inclusion will provide great benefit to the Firm and our clients.”

Mr. Raven has served as lead counsel in more than 100 jury trials, including extensive experience in commercial litigation, toxic tort, product liability, and criminal defense, particularly in cases involving environmental claims. In 1998, he was recognized by The National Law Journal for winning one of the year’s most significant verdicts in a wrongful death suit that resulted in a $9.9 million verdict for his client.

“I am extremely honored and privileged to serve in this leadership role with the skilled and experienced litigators of the Houston Trial Section,” says Mr. Raven. “Houston is the greatest city in America to practice trial law, and I am looking forward to this opportunity to support the Firm and my legal colleagues.”

Mr. Raven earned his law degree from the University of Houston Law Center and his undergraduate degree from the University of Houston. He served as a Harris County Assistant District Attorney for four years before entering private practice in 1994. He is married to Felicia Raven and they have two sons, James and Phillip Raven.

“This appointment is one more indication of our Firm’s sincere commitment to diversity and inclusion at all levels and for all employees, the recognition of diverse talents, and the rewarding of talented attorneys of the Firm, regardless of ethnicity,” says Pauline E.
