Penelope Mathew

Professor Penelope Mathew’s role as Dean of the largest law school in New Zealand, Auckland Law School, provides her with her List placement.

In 2020, Auckland Law School ranked 50th in the world and best in New Zealand on QS World University Rankings. Dr Mathew\’s profile has been low, but her influence is significance within legal education and it remains to be seen how the Australian academic brings her power to bear on shaping legal education.

She has with special interest in international refugee law, she has an extensive academic background, having been educated the University of Melbourne and Columbia Law School, her disciplinary background is international law and politics. Her career in academia has included positions at The University of Melbourne, The Australian National University, Michigan Law School and Griffith University, where she also served a four-year term as Dean and Head of Griffith Law School.

In 2008, the ACT government awarded her an International Women’s Day Award for outstanding contributions to human rights and social justice.
